beetFall is the best time to; again, take care of your overall health after a long summer carelessness! One of the best remedies to do so is beets juice.

Beets juice is sweet and lightly earthy in taste. Additionally, it is rich in vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. It is a source of the vitamin B complex (including vitamin B9- folic acid), vitamins A, E, K, and C; and also potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, phosphor, copper, chlorine, fluorine, zinc, boron, lithium, molybdenum, manganese, cobalt, rubidium. Beets juice also contains polyphenols including malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, and oxalic acid, carotenoids, glycosides- a very unique source of betaine – very strong natural red dye, which contains anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiparasitic, bactericidal properties. It can additionally neutralize acid-forming action of for example meats. That’s why; we should eat this great vegetable in many forms in the fall/ winter time. It’s great as a soup, salad, raw, or baked. Beets are strong antioxidants, the enemy of free radicals, which as we all know, can cause many diseases. Beets are also a great source of fiber.

Who should especially consume beets?

It is especially recommended for people who have problems with the cardiovascular system. However, it is especially important for anemic people because iron and vitamins from group B are advantageous for the blood system and red blood cell formation processes. Beets juice strengthens the immune system through a strong antioxidant action and it also contains antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.  It alleviates symptoms such as cough, heartburn and improves the overall condition of the body as well as the skin. Thanks to it we age slower and prevent the occurrence of cancer. Beets are a great remedy to strengthen the liver, spleen, bile ducts, and body detox. Betaine, contained in this vegetable, not only supports the liver in detoxifying toxins out of the body but also together with folic acid decreases homocysteine levels (which is known for causing atherosclerotic lesions). By the way, folic acid, contained in beets, is especially great for pregnant women because it greatly improves their health as well as the nervous system of the baby. Additionally, folic acid is important in the production of “happy hormones”. It produces neuro stimulating substances such as serotonin and noradrenaline. Beets also have a hematopoietic effect, cleanse the blood, and regulates metabolism, so it is a good aid when you are trying to lose weight, especially because 100g of beets are only 43 calories. Also, this vegetable mineralizes the body, works against bone decay, stimulates kidney function and lymphatic system, and strengthens intestinal motility. Thanks to vitamins of group B it strengthens the nervous system. It is just great for people who love physical activity or sport as it contains nitrates, which during metabolic processes, change into nitric oxide, and improves muscle blood supply and body function. Healthy bacterial flora should contain 20,000 different colonies of bacteria. Today people have maybe 2,000 colonies in their intestines. Beets juice, taken regularly, helps to regulate the intestine flora by bringing homeostatis between good and bad bacteria and increases the number of bacterial colonies.

Drinking freshly squeezed beets juice, because of its inorganic nitrates, it is also as good in lowering blood pressure as chemical drugs used to “fight” hypertension and is beneficial for cholesterol.  Beets juice widens the lumen of blood vessels, which is especially important in the prevention of atherosclerotic changes. In summary, beets decrease the chance of cardiovascular diseases including stroke, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction.


Beets juice, although very healthy, can’t be consumed by everyone. People with diabetes, rheumatism, and nephrolithiasis shouldn’t take it. Beets contain oxalates which can aggravate these diseases and increase the severity of gout symptoms in predisposed persons.
